3 Ways Anti-Fatigue Mats Are Failing You And Your Employees

Having the proper flooring is vital in any work environment, especially one that requires employees to stand for long hours. Most flooring is either too hard, or too soft, and does not provide the protection that employees need. Common problems associated with both hard floors and overly soft flooring or worn out anti-fatigue mats include foot, ankle, knee, hip and back pain. The discomfort, pain, and long-term injury associated with standing on improper flooring is real.

Many employers and employees think that anti-fatigue mats are not only the best option, but the only option. We think differently. Let’s take a quick look at how standard anti-fatigue mats are actually causing more health problems for your employees.

Anti-fatigue mats consist of three typical types: foam, foam rubber and hard rubber. Let’s start with foam. Foam anti-fatigue mats are typically used in environments where the employee endures through small vibrations or sound absorption. The downfall of foam matting is that it can often be too soft, resulting in the mat quickly wearing out. If you’re moving heavy equipment, foam matting sinks, making it very difficult to move equipment due to resistance.

Similar to foam anti-fatigue mats,  but slightly more durable, foam rubber is meant to stand up to long hours of standing while providing great stability. However, foam rubber doesn’t last in harsher working conditions with lots of foot traffic and heavy equipment.

The last type of anti-fatigue mats that we often see is hard rubber. These are typically found in more labor intensive work environments,, such as auto repair and woodworking shops. Unfortunately, hard rubber does not offer much, if any, physical relief beyond that of standard workplace flooring.
